the elusive concept of energy

July 8, 2024 Stephen C. Mace, LMT

Since the dawn of humanity, our ancestors have held a profound reverence for the connection to the Earth, a connection woven through the very fabric of existence by the thread of energy. This energy, an ethereal current from the great cosmic whatnot, courses through all living things, uniting the animate and the inanimate in a perpetual flow. It is the breath of the universe, the hum of the cosmos, the pulse that can be felt, heard, and cultivated. Some commune with it, others bask in its glow, but all are touched by its various frequencies and qualities. It is the underlying essence of all things, the unseen force that shapes our reality.

The healing arts find their roots in the ancient shamanic and animist traditions, where the mysteries of the cosmos were intertwined with the intricacies of human existence. Through centuries of exploration, practitioners have sifted through the layers of knowledge to understand the qualities of herbs, the vital functions of the body, and the profound effects of touch and manipulation. The advent of the scientific method propelled urgent care and emergency medicine into new realms, bringing forth antibiotics, hip replacements, and wondrous machines that go "bing." Yet, in our pursuit of technological marvels, we have lost a part of our collective soul, a part that understood vitality and our intrinsic connection to nature.

This lost understanding lies just beneath the surface, waiting to be rediscovered. The journey to reincorporate vitalism and energetics into modern practice is not an easy one, yet it is essential. This is a topic of much debate in the healing arts. By debate, we mean a silent one… It revolves around the elusive concept of energy—a term that carries different meanings in different circles. For some, it is a spiritual force; for others, it is a mechanical or electrical phenomenon. Despite the varied interpretations, the word "energy" persists, a testament to the interconnectedness and complexity of these concepts.

As practitioners, it is crucial to understand which concept of energy we are referring to and the principles that it follows. We must embrace the interchangeable nature of the term, delighting in the contemplation of its various meanings. Sometimes, we speak of energy metaphorically, hinting at science; other times, we delve into the purely scientific or metaphysical. Being joyfully aware of these shifts in meaning enriches our understanding and practice.

Here, we explore a melding of these concepts, holding space and open minds for all possibilities. While efforts are often made to clarify which type of energy is being referred to, the term will frequently be used playfully to spark our collective imagination. In this context, energy is a fluid concept, sometimes given different names depending on the healing tradition.

Next time, let's delve into the many references to energy throughout the healing arts, what they mean, and how they relate to each other.
